      There are lots of ways this can happen. Most people experience some hearing loss as they get older (the level of which seems to be partly genetic), but exposure to loud noises or music over a long period, sudden shocks to the ear (such as an explosion) can damage the ear drum or other parts of the ear. Some drugs, diabetes and diet can all affect the hearing. From what I can tell, these are thought to be through damage to the blood vessels surrounding the small bones in your ears.
