The most powerful laser in the world is at the United States National Ignition Facility – it’s an ultraviolet laser used to start nuclear fusion reactions (the same process that powers the sun!). It fires short pulses of laser light which have a power equivalent to 500 trillion Watts (how many watts does a normal light bulb have?

This can generate temperatures in it’s target of about 100 million Celcius, which is about 10 times hotter than the centre of the Sun!
