The strongest material I’ve read about is graphene – a recently discovered supermaterial which is made up of large sheets of carbon atoms connected together so they form a hexagonal pattern. It’s been worked out that graphene is so strong that it would take an elephant balanced on a pencil to break through a sheet of graphene the thickness of a sheet of clingfilm.

It’s not used for anything outside of a research lab at the moment, but expect to see it in a few years time in things like solar panels, phone displays (that could be thin enough to roll up!), really thin electronics and many other things.

Can you think of any other materials made from carbon that are really strong?
